Mono Lake Committee

Ensuring the health of a unique ecosystem.

Our Challenge: JCI assisted the Mono Lake Committee in fighting for the conservation of Mono Lake. Mono Lake is suffering from climate change, and its ecological degradation is exacerbated by a continued legacy of water exports from its tributaries by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The Mono Lake Committee needed help approaching city leadership in Los Angeles and we aimed to encourage major power players to take action to support the goals of the committee.
Our Approach: We designed a three-pronged approach in which we met with policy officials in an educational context about the continued threats to the lake and the need for sustainable practice, we produced media for the general public in order to give context on Mono Lake and LADWP and we developed messaging to be used by the Mono Lake Committee.
Our Results: Though ongoing, we have helped the Mono Lake Committee meet with a majority of the LA City Council members, and we were instrumental in creating an emergency action workshop concerning the lake’s water supply hosted by the State Water Resources Control Board. We also organized an advocacy day at Los Angeles City Hall with community-based organizations in support of the lake.
