MONO LAKE COMMITTEE
Ensuring the health of a unique ecosystem.
Our Client: The Mono Lake Committee is an environmental organization based in Lee Vining, California. Its mission is to preserve Mono Lake, by reducing diversions of water from the Eastern Sierra watersheds by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
Our Challenge: JCI assisted the Mono Lake Committee in fighting for the conservation of Mono Lake. The lake suffers from the impacts of climate change, and its ecological degradation is exacerbated by a continued legacy of water exports from its tributaries by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The Mono Lake Committee sought assistance in dealing with Los Angeles city leadership and aimed to encourage major power players to take action to support the goals of the committee.
Our Approach: We designed a three-pronged approach in which we met with policy officials in an educational context about the continued threats to the lake and the need for sustainable practice, we produced media for the general public in order to give context on Mono Lake and LADWP and we developed messaging to be used by the Mono Lake Committee.
Our Results: We have helped the Mono Lake Committee build its presence with key stakeholders, city leadership and key elected officials. Working with environmental groups and local and state advocacy groups, we were able to get the mayor and lead agencies to reduce their water usage on Mono Lake, a first step and a long process to advocating for the future of the international environmental landmark.
