
Chevron: No on Proposition 87 Campaign
Proposition 87 proposed a $4 billion tax on California oil producers and claimed that it would use this money to plan research and production initiatives for alternative energy vehicle use. If passed, however, Prop 87 would have ultimately been detrimental to all of us. Proposition 87 meant higher gas prices for consumers and a greater dependency on foreign oil, since higher taxes would reduce in-state oil production. It would also have resulted in the formation of a new bureaucracy consisting of 50 political appointees with no accountability to us as taxpayers. The purpose of JCI’s Prop 87 campaign: to build local opposition among service organizations, school districts, chambers of commerce, and community groups. Our campaign included:
